Created by the Gracie University in California, and proudly offered here in Tameside - Gracie Combatives (Watch video ▶︎) is our beginner adults programme designed for men and women with no previous experience with this or any other martial art. You'll learn the 36 most important self-defence techniques of Jiu Jitsu in a very organised, safe and welcoming environment.
 
In every class you will learn:

How to defend and escape from the worst positions

How to control and submit someone - even if they are larger and stronger than you

How to manage the distance against strikes both standing and on the ground

Safety is the number one concern in this programme. Far too many people quit Jiu Jitsu in the early stages due to injury. 

You will start by learning the techniques in a co-operative manner with a like-minded training partner before any live training.

We have members that have never exercised and some very active, members who are 25 and some 55. All with no previous experience in Jiu Jitsu.

This programme is designed for everyone, regardless of your age, gender or physical ability - you'll have a great experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don’t have any martial arts experience?


No problem! Our beginner programs are specifically designed, from a structure and a safety perspective, for first-time jiu-jitsu practitioners, which is why we have the most successful jiu-jitsu schools in the world.




Who teaches the classes?


All of our classes are taught by certified Gracie University instructors Alex and James. These guys have not only dedicated their lives to becoming better Jiu Jitsu practitioners, but they spend an equal amount of time trying to become the best Jiu Jitsu instructors; travelling to GU HQ in California to complete the Gracie Instructor Certification Programme. We believe that anyone can learn Jiu Jitsu and that there is no such thing as good or bad students, just good or bad teachers.




Will I get injured or embarrassed?


If you get injured or embarrassed you won't come back. Everything about our beginner programs was specifically designed to make the classes as safe and encouraging for new students as possible.




When and where are the classes?


All of our classes are run from our 3500sqft full time facility: Unit 1 Vale Mill, Huddersfield Road, Mossley, OL59LL. We offer multiple classes throughout the week so there’s always an option for you: Monday at 8pm Tuesday at 6:30pm Wednesday at 7:30pm Thursday at 6:30pm




How much are memberships?


Our memberships range from £40-£80 per month with no long term contracts and loads of flexibility. We are confident there will be an option to suit your schedule and budget. Memberships also include access to Gracie Combatives online and free training at any Gracie University Training Centre worldwide. They are great value!




Do I need to be in shape?


No, we love you exactly how you are. You don't get in shape to learn jiu-jitsu, you do jiu-jitsu to get in shape!




Are the classes suitable for women as well?


Yes! Jiu Jitsu is perfect for women and we are working hard to make sure more women feel comfortable starting this amazing martial art. Whilst we are working hard to grow the community of women in Jiu Jitsu, we are still someway off where we want to be! Rest assured every member (man or woman) is dedicated to helping each other grow and we’ve had plenty of women start on their own and love it, however, if you want a guaranteed female training partner it may be a good idea to speak to a friend and come together.




What equipment will I need?


For your first class you will only need to wear something comfortable. Once you become a member you will need a white BJJ Gi. These can be bought at the training centre and many places online.
