How Does The Course Work?

Step 1:
Learn The 36 Essential Techniques
Originally developed for the U.S. Army, Gracie Combatives is entirely dedicated to the mastery of 36 essential techniques organised into 23 one-hour lessons.
These 36 techniques address the most common behaviors with the greatest success in real fights.
This program makes learning jiu-jitsu easy and fun regardless of your age or physical ability.

Step 2:
Develop Your Reflexes
Once you complete each of the 23 Gracie Combatives lessons twice, you will qualify to participate in the Reflex Development (RD) Classes.
In Reflex Development classes, you will learn how to combine the 36 techniques to address the most common occurrences in a real fight.
This is where your confidence and belief in your abilities will start to increase!

Step 3:
Earn Your Gracie Combatives Belt
Once you’ve gained proficiency in the 36 techniques you can test for your Gracie Combatives belt.
Promotion to Gracie Combatives belt means you’ve demonstrated the ability to defend yourself against an untrained opponent that is heavier, stronger, and more athletic than you.
Beyond this you will transition to the Master Cycle advanced classes.

Meet Your Instuctors
Ryron and Rener Gracie have always envisioned their curriculums being available around the world, and nothing was more important than making sure that the learning experience at all Certified Training Centres mirrored that of the Gracie University Headquarters in Torrance, CA, and this is what led to the development of the Instructor Certification Program.
Through this rigorous and highly-comprehensive program, prospective instructors are introduced to the teaching methodologies and training programs that have been developed and refined for three generations of the Gracie family.
Alex and James successfully completed the ICP and both are capable of teaching Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in accordance with the high standards established by Grand Master Helio Gracie and maintained by Gracie University.

Frequently asked questions

Kids Karate Classes vs Kids BJJ Classes - What's the difference? Many parents ask, what’s the difference between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Karate classes? While we believe all martial-arts have value, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has not only been proven to be the most effective martial art for a smaller person to defend themselves in a real fight for nearly a century, it also can be the most gentile. We don’t want our kids or students turning into bullies themselves, and we also believe self-defence should be scalable, depending on the situation. Whereas kids Karate lessons or Taekwondo classes rely solely on landing punches and kicks, jiu-jitsu for kids focuses on neutralising a threat with verbal boundaries, distance management, body control, and eventual negotiation.
-
Are parents allowed to watch? In Mat Munchkins it in mandatory that a parent or guardian participate in the class with their child. We encourage parents to stay and watch! There are sofa's, wifi and hot drinks available. Ultimately we love parents getting involved! Even better… you can join in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes for adults, and have yet another thing in common with your little one. We love seeing the bond of families who train together!
-
Where are you based? Our address is: Unit 1 Vale Mill, Huddersfield Road, Mossley, OL5 9LL. We have a small car park of Huddersfield Rd, however if it's full you can park carefully on the street outside.
-
How much do memberships cost?We have multiple membership options starting from £35 per month depending on the class type and how many classes per month you would like to attend. Mat Munckins have the option to purchase a block of classes instead of a monthly membership. All memberships include: ✅ Flexible classes so you don't have to stick to set days ✅ No extra charges for joining the intermidate or advanced classes ✅ A free Gracie Bullyproof online subscription that mirrors your in person classes ✅ Free attendance to our Gracie Game Day (Character Development Programme) On your first class, we'll send you home with a membership pack with more details on the different options, plus links to sign up.

Will my child become a bully?Through our work, we have seen that confident kids make kinder kids. We teach children how to not only stand up to bullies for themselves, but how to stand up for others. Our Rules of Engagement teach children to avoid the fight if at all possible by first using their words, and then telling an adult. When they do need to resort to physical self-defence, we do not teach children punches or kicks in the Gracie Bullyproof program, but rather, empowered by Brazilian Jiu-JItsu, to neutralise, defend, control, and negotiate if possible.
-
My child isn't a sporty person, will they feel left out?We believe jiu-jitsu is for children of all skill levels and abilities. Your child belongs here. Through our kids martial arts classes, we have seen our students improve co-ordination, balance, motor skills, focus and discipline. Plus, they make lots of great friends! Our instructors are highly skilled in teaching martial arts to kids. It’s their PASSION!
-
What does my child need to wear? For your child’s first jiu-jitsu class, we recommend wearing shorts or joggers, and a t-shirt! If they continue training with us they will need a Jiu Jitsu Gi. These can be purchased at the facility or elsewhere so long as it is white.
